A note from our curator, Clarity:
When I was in art school, I was warned never to use the word “goddess” in an artist statement. As odd as this sounds now, it represented the prevailing attitude in the art world at the time. The 1970s feminist art movement, which explored goddess imagery as an alternative to patriarchal religious symbolism, was followed by a long period in which such work was seen as taboo and slightly embarrassing. I’m happy to say this is now changing, as contemporary artists assert the importance of spirituality in their work (and the feminist art movement is finally getting its due). The idea for Magic Praxis formed from curiosity; I wanted to see what a 2015 group show about the divine feminine would look like. I invited artists whose work invokes a sublime feminine power through ideas of ritual, sacred geometry, gender fluidity, craft, sexuality and mythology.

Hope to see you!
