Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum
Saturday, June 2: Brooklyn Block Party
Free admission from 5 to 11 p.m.

Come celebrate the beginning of the summer season with a night of
music, games, contests, and food. Highlights include:
5-7 p.m. Music
Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor
Son de Madre blends Cuban music with jazz, funk, and Brazilian. Part of
Carnegie Hall’s [3]Neighborhood Concerts series.

5-8 p.m. Performance Showcase
Museum Plaza (Rain location: Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor)
Performers from the Museum’s local community showcase their talents
throughout the Museum.
5-8 p.m. Action Station
Museum Plaza (Rain location: Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor)
Laura Nova and Theresa Loong, creators of the Museum at Eldridge
Street’s Feed Me a Story Project, invite visitors to reflect on their
lives through memories of food.

6 p.m. Film
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
Hands to the Sky (Angelo Boyke, 52 min., 2010). A documentary
celebrating the world of outdoor house music parties. A Q&A with the
filmmakers will follow. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at
5 p.m.

6 p.m. Gallery Talk
Throughout the Museum
A Museum Guide leads a gallery tour on the Museum’s architecture.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-on Art
Education Gallery, 1st Floor
Search the galleries for hot Brooklyn styles, and create a fashionable
wrap to wear to the dance party. Free tickets available at the Visitor
Center at 5:30 p.m.

6 p.m. Talk
Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Forum, 4th Floor
Blue Marble Ice Cream’s Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas speak about
their nonprofit, Blue Marble Dreams, which has helped eleven Rwandan
women open their country’s first ice cream shop. Free tickets available
at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

7 p.m. Gallery Talk
Throughout the Museum
A Museum Guide leads a gallery tour on the topic of "Summer Fun."

7-9 p.m. Activation
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery, 5th Floor
[4]Raw/Cooked artist Heather Hart discusses her installation, as
visitors participate in transformative activities, from tarot readings
to makeovers. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8-10 p.m. Dance Party
Museum Parking Lot (Rain location: Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor)
Society HAE presents "Beats, Blocks & Brooklyn" featuring DJ crew the
Ahficionados with Jasmine Solano, spinning music from Biggie to the
Beastie Boys.

8-10 p.m. Participatory Program
Throughout the Museum
Pose for street style-inspired portraits by photographers Jamel
Shabazz, Iafotographeuse, Delphine Fawundu-Buford, and Laylah Amatullah
Barrayn. Visitors are also encouraged to post their own images, tagged
#BrooklynMuseum and #BeatsBlocksBrooklyn.

9 p.m. Book Club
Luce Center for American Art, 5th Floor
Suleiman Osman, author of The Invention of Brownstone Brooklyn:
Gentrification and the Search for Authenticity in Postwar New York,
speaks about his book and leads a discussion on gentrification in
Brooklyn.

9-10 p.m. Performance
Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor
Zongo Junction blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz, and soul.

10-11 p.m. Late Night in the Galleries
All galleries open. Explore the Museum.
