New course! History of Urban Planning and Design

We have a new course, which I have mentioned on this blog before, but it didn’t have a number then – so we listed it as “special topics” – but it has a number now, so please sign up.  All of our new courses are always in danger of being cut for low enrollment – so please don’t let this happen! This counts as an upper level art history course toward the major.

This course will explore approaches to urban design in the West, from the ancient world through the present day.   It will analyze the ways in which city planners have responded to changing social and political circumstances through history.  The course will consider theories and methods of planning, and look at projects both realized and unrealized.  Additionally, this course will teach students how to meaningfully interact with urban forms, using local urban spaces as teaching tools.
