The Modern Metropolis: Architecture and Urbanism in New York City

This course will examine NY’s evolution into a modern city.  We will study well-known monuments along with lesser-known but important works, and consider political, cultural and economic factors that fueled the development of New York’s built environment. Beginning with New York’s emergence as a major urban center in the mid-19th century, we will examine its periods of growth, innovation, decline and rebirth through the present day.  This course will situate the buildings of New  York City within the broader discourse of American architectural history, and will consider the impact that New York had on architectural and urban development across the nation.
