da Centotto: A closing. An opening. A Pile of Clowns.

October 23, 2012

*Amici*,

Please join us this Thursday evening from 7-10pm for the closing of *Portfolio
x Appunti 4: Thomas Micchelli <http://centotto.com/>.*

Pretty please. Also, please allow us to now more fully announce our
forthcoming exhibit:

*A Pile of Clowns*

Vague lampoonery, blunt mindlessness, binders full of buffoonery.
With certain ambiguous notes of seriousness thrown in.

After a long season of soft serves and irksome songs,
may the swifter ice cream truck and quicker man therein
rule the day this fall and deliver us from din.

A visual ode not to candidates but to else-mediated chiders and choads.

Artworks by Christopher Moss, Dumitru Gorzo, Pam Butler, Paul Gagner, Joel
Dugan and Vincent Romaniello.

Opening reception: Friday, 2 November 2012, 7-10pm. More information
here<http://centotto.com/annunci/a-pile-of-clowns/>and on the flyer
below.

*A prestissimo, spero,*

Last night’s Art history career panel recap

October 19, 2012

Last night the Art Historians, led by Professor Malka Simon, hosted four panelists who spoke about their careers in Art History – it was a fantastic event!  Special thanks to Professor Simon for organizing and to the great speakers who offered so much.  All four panelists have taken different career paths, which were highlighted in our efforts to show the MANY careers that an art historian can have – we are not all professors and museum curators!  The speakers were:

Dean Maria Conelli who has had a long career in Museum and Art Education administration

Sonja Sekely who is a Visual Resources curator at Drew University (and an alum of our MA program!)

Christine Brennan Senior Research Associate at the Metrpolitan Museum in the Medieval Department who has had a long career in collections management

Alexandra Lange who is an architecture and design critic

All four panelists had lots of practical advice including some websites of where to look for jobs which I have added to the resource page from the first career event on this site – check that out here!

I wanted to highlight some other things that came out of it:

-the importance of doing internships to explore careers

-the importance of meeting professionals as a way of finding a mentor

-the importance of practicing writing (Alexandra Lange suggested blogging as a way of doing this) and writing all the time  – go to museums and galleries and write about it after

-reading blogs that interest you and pitch ideas to them as a way to put your writing practice to work

-getting computer and tech skills of all kinds – many of the jobs and paths discussed last night have a tech component!

-being professional at every turn, even or especially in an unpaid internship – any situation could be your foot in the door.
